Kokosei refers to high school students in Japan. The term is a contraction of "kōtō gakkō" (high school) and "seito" (student). Japanese high schools typically cover grades 10, 11, and 12. The age range for kokosei is generally between 15 and 18 years old. Entrance into high school in Japan is not compulsory, and students must pass entrance examinations to be admitted to most schools.

The daily life of a kokosei is often characterized by a structured schedule. School days usually begin in the morning and end in the afternoon, followed by club activities, known as "bukatsu." These clubs can range from sports like baseball and kendo to cultural pursuits such as calligraphy and tea ceremony.
