Kobberprosesser refers to the various industrial methods used for the extraction and refining of copper from its ores. These processes are crucial for obtaining pure copper, a vital metal used in a wide range of applications due to its excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance.

The initial stage of copper processing typically involves mining the ore, which is then crushed and ground to liberate the copper minerals. Concentration methods, such as flotation, are employed to separate the valuable copper minerals from waste rock. The concentrated ore, often in the form of a sulfide concentrate, then undergoes smelting. Smelting involves heating the concentrate at high temperatures, usually with fluxes and air, to produce a molten material called matte, which contains a higher concentration of copper sulfides and other valuable metals like gold and silver.

Following smelting, pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical refining techniques are used to further purify the copper. Pyrometallurgical processes, like the Peirce-Smith process, involve blowing air through molten matte to oxidize impurities and produce blister copper, which is about 98-99% pure. For higher purity, electrolytic refining is commonly used. In this process, blister copper serves as the anode, and a thin sheet of pure copper acts as the cathode, immersed in an electrolyte solution. An electric current causes copper to dissolve from the anode and deposit onto the cathode, yielding highly pure copper.

Hydrometallurgical routes, particularly for oxide ores or low-grade sulfide ores, involve leaching the copper from the ore using chemical solutions, often sulfuric acid. The leached copper is then recovered through solvent extraction and electrowinning, where an electric current is used to deposit pure copper onto cathodes. The choice of process depends on factors such as ore type, economic considerations, and desired product purity.
