Kirkasvalolaitteet, also known as light therapy lamps or SAD lamps, are devices designed to emit bright light, typically mimicking natural sunlight. They are primarily used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to changes in seasons. The bright light is thought to influence the body's internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, and affect neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin, which play a role in mood and sleep.
These devices usually emit light at a high intensity, often around 10,000 lux, at a safe distance.
While SAD is the most common application, some people use kirkasvalolaitteet for other conditions such as sleep
