It refers to the norms of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary that are codified and taught as the conventional form of Finnish for writing.

The concept is primarily contrasted with puhekieli, or spoken language, which includes colloquialisms, regional slang, contractions, and other features typical of everyday speech. Kirjakielinen tends to be more standardized and explicit, often avoiding nonstandard forms and slang in order to ensure clarity and mutual intelligibility across dialects and generations. However, the boundary between kirjakielinen and puhekieli is not absolute, and contemporary texts can blend registers depending on genre and audience.

Historically, kirjakielinen emerged from the process of codifying Finnish after the language began to be used more widely in writing from the 16th century onward. The development accelerated during the 19th and early 20th centuries through the work of linguists, dictionaries, and style guides that established orthographic norms and grammar.
