Kilnlined is a term used to describe the interior lining of a kiln. This refractory layer serves to insulate the vessel, resist high temperatures, and protect structural components from heat, chemical attack, and thermal stress. A kiln is described as kilnlined when a new lining has been installed or when an existing lining has been refurbished.

Common kiln linings are installed as brickwork or as monolithic castables. Brick linings use refractory bricks such as fireclay, high-alumina, or magnesia bricks set in mortar. Monolithic linings use castable refractories or ceramic fiber modules, installed as a seamless interior. Materials are chosen based on operating temperature, atmosphere, mechanical load, and insulation needs.

Maintenance includes inspecting for cracks, spalling, or dust liberation; replacing damaged sections; and controlling heat-up and cool-down to minimize thermal stress. Replacement intervals vary with use, from several years in pottery kilns to shorter spans in harsh industrial kilns. Proper curing and gradual heating are important when installing a new lining.

Health and safety considerations include hot surfaces, dust from degraded refractory, and handling heavy bricks or modules. Installations should follow manufacturer specifications and applicable standards for refractories and kiln operation.
