Kiirusmõõtur, also known as a speedometer, is an instrument used to measure and display the instantaneous speed of a vehicle. In most cases, it shows the speed in kilometers per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph). The primary function of a kiirusmõõtur is to provide the driver with real-time information about how fast they are traveling, which is crucial for safe driving, adhering to speed limits, and optimizing fuel efficiency.

Historically, early kiirusmõõturid relied on mechanical systems. These typically employed a rotating cable connected to the vehicle's transmission or wheels. The rotation of this cable would spin a magnet within a non-magnetic cup attached to a needle. Eddy currents induced in the cup by the spinning magnet would create a drag force, causing the cup and the attached needle to move across a calibrated dial, indicating the speed.

Modern kiirusmõõturid are predominantly electronic. They often utilize sensors that detect the rotation of the wheels or the output shaft of the transmission. These sensors generate electrical signals that are then processed by a computer. The computer calculates the speed based on the frequency of these signals and displays the information digitally on a screen or as a needle on an analog-like gauge. Many modern vehicles also integrate the kiirusmõõtur with other vehicle systems, such as cruise control and navigation.
