A kiinteäpetireaktori, or fixed-bed reactor, is a type of chemical reactor commonly used in industrial processes. In a fixed-bed reactor, the catalyst is stationary and does not move. The reactant fluid flows through the bed of solid catalyst particles. The catalyst promotes the desired chemical reaction between the reactants.

The design of a fixed-bed reactor is relatively simple. It typically consists of a cylindrical vessel packed with catalyst. The reactants enter at one end of the reactor and exit at the other, passing through the catalyst bed. Heat transfer can be a significant consideration in fixed-bed reactors. If the reaction is exothermic, heat must be removed to prevent overheating and potential damage to the catalyst or reactor. Conversely, for endothermic reactions, heat must be supplied to maintain the reaction rate. This can be achieved through internal cooling or heating coils, or by using a shell-and-tube design where a heat transfer fluid circulates around the catalyst-filled tubes.

Fixed-bed reactors are widely employed in various industries, including petrochemicals, refining, and synthesis gas production. Examples of processes utilizing fixed-bed reactors include ammonia synthesis, catalytic cracking, and the production of methanol. The advantages of fixed-bed reactors include their simplicity, relatively low operating costs, and ease of catalyst loading. However, they can suffer from pressure drop across the bed, potential for channeling of the fluid, and challenges with heat management for highly exothermic or endothermic reactions. Catalyst deactivation over time is also a common issue, often requiring periodic regeneration or replacement.
