khaliphate

A caliphate, also spelled khaliphate or khilafah, is a form of Islamic government led by a caliph, a leader who is regarded as the successor or representative of the Prophet Muhammad. The word khalifa means “successor” or “steward” in Arabic. In theory, a caliphate combines political sovereignty with religious authority and aims to implement Islamic law (sharia) and to unite the Muslim community (umma).

Historically, the first caliphates began after Muhammad’s death in the 7th century. The Rashidun Caliphate (632–661) expanded rapidly across the Arabian Peninsula and into the Levant, Persia, and Egypt. The Umayyad Caliphate (661–750) established a hereditary dynasty and moved the capital to Damascus. The Abbasid Caliphate (750–1258) presided over a long period of cultural and scientific flourishing from Baghdad, though political power gradually weakened and control fragmented. Several later polities claimed caliphal authority, including the Fatimids in North Africa and the Iberian Umayyads (Caliphate of Córdoba). The Ottoman Empire took on the title of caliph in the 16th century, continuing the institution until the position was formally abolished in 1924.

In the modern era, the term caliphate has been invoked by various movements and groups claiming religious legitimacy, most notably by the Islamic State from 2014 to 2019, though such claims are disputed and widely rejected by mainstream Muslim communities. Today, there is no universally recognized caliphate, and the concept remains debated within Islam, with different traditions offering divergent understandings of legitimacy, authority, and governance.
