Keuhkofibroosi, known in English as pulmonary fibrosis, is a chronic lung disease characterized by the thickening and scarring of lung tissue. This scarring, or fibrosis, makes the lungs stiff and less able to expand and contract, leading to breathing difficulties. The exact cause of keuhkofibroosi is often unknown, a condition called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, various factors can contribute to its development, including certain environmental exposures like dust and silica, some medications, connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, and certain viral infections.

Symptoms of keuhkofibroosi typically develop gradually and worsen over time. The most common symptom is progressive shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity. Other symptoms may include a dry, hacking cough that doesn't produce mucus, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and clubbing of the fingers or toes. The progression of the disease varies significantly among individuals.

Diagnosis of keuhkofibroosi involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, lung function tests, imaging such as a chest X-ray and high-resolution CT scan, and sometimes a lung biopsy. There is currently no cure for keuhkofibroosi, and treatments focus on managing symptoms, slowing disease progression, and improving quality of life. Medications may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and scarring, and oxygen therapy can help with shortness of breath. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs can also be beneficial, teaching exercises and techniques to help patients manage their condition. In severe cases, a lung transplant may be an option.
