Kestävyysharjoittelu, or endurance training, is the systematic practice of increasing the body's ability to sustain prolonged physical effort, especially aerobic activities such as running, cycling, swimming, or rowing.

The primary goal is to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular endurance, enabling longer performance with reduced perceived effort. Training also enhances metabolic efficiency, lactate clearance, and fatigue resistance, benefiting both athletes and the general population.

Endurance training encompasses various modalities. Aerobic training relies on steady-state effort, while interval and tempo work improve speed and capacity. Long, low-intensity sessions build base endurance; higher-intensity workouts develop lactate tolerance and performance.

In planning endurance training, key principles include progressive overload, specificity, individualization, recovery, and periodization. Training should gradually increase volume or intensity, target relevant activities, account for individual fitness, include rest, and vary phases to peak at relevant times.

Common formats include long slow distance sessions, tempo runs or rides, interval training, and cross-training. A balanced program integrates various modalities and allows adequate recovery to prevent overuse injuries.
