Kernetimer, commonly referred to as kernel timer, is a mechanism within an operating system's kernel that schedules the execution of a function or task at a future point in time, or at regular intervals. Kernel timers run in privileged mode and are used to implement timeouts, deferred work, scheduling primitives, and other time-based control within the kernel. They are distinct from user-space timers and from hardware timers that generate interrupts for devices.

How a kernel timer works varies by architecture, but the general approach is similar: a hardware timer provides a time source and interrupts the processor at regular intervals; the kernel maintains a data structure of pending timer events with their expiration times; when the current time reaches an event's expiration, the kernel schedules the corresponding callback, which may execute immediately in interrupt context or be deferred to a safer context (such as a work queue or a dedicated kernel thread).

Common timer types include one-shot timers, which fire once and are then canceled; periodic timers, which reschedule themselves after each firing; and high-resolution timers, which offer finer granularity than traditional timers. Implementations span multiple operating systems: Linux exposes timer_list-based timers and high-resolution timers (hrtimers); Windows uses kernel timer objects coupled with Deferred Procedure Calls; BSD-family systems use callouts or similar mechanisms.

Design considerations for kernetimers include minimizing latency, reducing overhead, avoiding race conditions and deadlocks, and ensuring deterministic behavior where required. Effective use often involves deferring work to non-interrupt contexts and coordinating with other kernel subsystems such as schedulers, interrupts, and I/O subsystems. In practice, kernetimers are a foundational primitive for many kernel subsystems and are critical to responsive time-based processing.
