Kaugvõrguga is the Estonian term used to describe a device, system, or service that operates with resources located on a distant network rather than solely on a local network. The word combines kaug- meaning “far” and võrk meaning “network.” In Estonian IT literature the expression is used to indicate remote connectivity to other networks via the internet, a wide-area network (WAN), a VPN, or cloud services, enabling access to data and applications hosted elsewhere.

In computing and information technology, a workstation, server, or Internet of Things device can be described as working with a remote network when it relies on resources located outside its local LAN. Examples include accessing files on a central file server, running software hosted in the cloud, or sending data to and receiving commands from a remote data center. In telecommunications, devices connected through satellite links or long-haul fiber connections can be described as operating with a distant network. The term is also used to discuss remote management, where administrators connect to devices via VPN, SSH, or management consoles over the internet.

Advantages of a kaugvõrguga setup include centralized resources, easier software deployment and updates, scalability, and remote accessibility. Challenges commonly involve latency, bandwidth limits, outage risks, and security concerns. Effective implementation relies on proper encryption, strong authentication, access controls, and comprehensive monitoring.
