Kategorizim, or categorization, is the process of organizing items, data, or concepts into groups or categories based on shared characteristics. It is used across many fields, including information science, linguistics, biology, and knowledge management, to simplify search, comparison, and analysis. The category system is a human-crafted construct that depends on context, purpose, and domain, and may evolve as new information becomes available.

There are manual and automatic approaches. Manual categorization relies on human judgment to assign items to predefined categories, while automatic categorization uses algorithms to classify data. Categories can be hierarchical, forming a taxonomy, or flat, without levels. In information science, categorization is related to but distinct from taxonomy (a structured set of categories) and ontology (a formal representation of concepts and their relationships).

Typical workflow includes defining scope and criteria, generating candidate categories, assigning items, validating with experts or users, and refining the system as new data emerge. Evaluation methods may involve inter-annotator agreement and accuracy measures for automated systems.

Applications are widespread and include library and museum classification systems (such as Dewey Decimal and other taxonomic schemes), biological taxonomy, tagging and metadata creation for digital content, product categorization in e-commerce, and the organization of search, indexing, and recommendation systems.

Challenges in kategorizim include subjectivity and ambiguity, polysemy, cultural and linguistic differences, evolving domains, and managing scale and consistency. Poorly designed categories can introduce bias, misclassification, or fragmentation that hinders retrieval and analysis.
