Kapokväxten, scientifically known as Ceiba pentandra, is a tropical tree that belongs to the Malvaceae family. It is native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, and West Africa. The tree is renowned for its distinctive appearance and the soft, fluffy fiber that surrounds its seeds, which is known as kapok.

Kapok trees are large, fast-growing trees that can reach heights of up to 70 meters (230 feet). They have a straight, cylindrical trunk that is often buttressed at the base. The leaves are palmate, with 5 to 9 leaflets, and the flowers are typically white or pink, with five petals. The fruit is a capsule that splits open when mature to reveal the kapok fiber.

The kapok fiber is lightweight, buoyant, and water-repellent, making it ideal for use as stuffing in mattresses, pillows, upholstery, and life jackets. Historically, it was also used for insulation and as a filling for fireproof materials. Despite its utility, the harvesting and processing of kapok can be labor-intensive.

In addition to its economic uses, the kapok tree holds cultural significance in many regions. It is considered sacred in some indigenous cultures and is often associated with fertility and protection. The tree's rapid growth and impressive stature have also led to its admiration as a symbol of strength and resilience.
