This phenomenon is not a natural occurrence but rather the result of human activity, most commonly related to the abandonment or escape of domestic canaries.

While canaries are native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores, domesticated populations have been introduced globally. In urban or suburban environments, escaped or released pet canaries may find themselves in conditions that are not conducive to their long-term survival, especially in regions with colder climates.
