Kamuflajn, or camouflage, refers to methods used to conceal, deceive, or mislead observers about the presence, identity, or nature of a person, object, or installation. The aim is to reduce detectability by matching color, pattern, texture, and contours to the surrounding environment, altering outlines, and sometimes influencing movement. The term kamuflajn is used in Serbo-Croatian and related languages and is derived from the French camoufler.

History and development have roots in military practice dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Modern camouflage patterns emerged during World War I and evolved through World War II and the postwar era, driven by the need to blend with diverse terrains such as woodland, desert, snow, and urban settings. In recent decades, digital and multi-terrain patterns, as well as specialized clothing and equipment, have expanded the toolkit of camouflage.

Techniques and types include background matching, where colors and textures resemble the local environment; disruptive coloration, which uses patterns to break up the observer’s ability to detect or recognize a form; and concealment, which reduces glare and silhouette. Methods commonly used include camouflage clothing, nets and nettings, face paint, ghillie suits for ground concealment, vehicle and equipment patterns, and decoys or decoy sounds to mislead observers.

Applications span military and law enforcement, hunting, wildlife photography, and fashion. While camouflage can significantly reduce detectability, it does not render objects invisible. Effectiveness depends on environmental contrast, lighting, movement, and training. Ongoing developments include increasingly sophisticated digital patterns and research into adaptive or dynamic camouflage materials.
