Kammiovärinöitä, also known as ventricular fibrillation (VFib), is a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia characterized by rapid, chaotic electrical activity in the ventricles of the heart. Instead of a coordinated contraction, the ventricular muscle fibers quiver ineffectively. This prevents the heart from pumping blood to the body, leading to a sudden loss of consciousness and absent pulse.

The underlying cause of kammiovärinöitä is typically severe electrical instability within the heart. This can be triggered by a variety of conditions, including myocardial infarction (heart attack), severe electrolyte imbalances, drug toxicity, or inherited cardiac channelopathies. During an episode of kammiovärinöitä, the heart's electrical impulses become disorganized, preventing the ventricles from filling properly with blood and subsequently ejecting it.
