Kaatot is a traditional martial art originating from the southern Indian state of Kerala. The term "kaatot" is derived from the Malayalam words "kay" (meaning "hand") and "ottu" (meaning "to strike"), reflecting its emphasis on hand-to-hand combat techniques. This martial art is deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural and historical heritage, with roots tracing back over a thousand years.

Kaatot is characterized by its fluid, efficient movements and a focus on practical self-defense rather than sport or competition. Practitioners learn a variety of strikes, blocks, joint locks, and grappling techniques, often incorporating elements of weaponry such as sticks (*kathari*), swords, and daggers.
