Kaasuvedenlämmitin, known in English as a gas water heater, is a domestic appliance used to heat water for household use, such as for bathing, washing dishes, and laundry. These units typically burn natural gas or propane to heat water that flows through a heat exchanger. The hot water can then be supplied on demand or stored in a tank.

There are two primary types of kaasuvedenlämmitin: tank-style and tankless. Tank-style heaters store a volume of water in an insulated tank, which is kept at a set temperature. When hot water is used, it is drawn from the top of the tank, and cold water enters the bottom to be heated. Tankless, or on-demand, heaters heat water as it passes through the unit, meaning they do not store hot water. This can lead to energy savings as there is no standby heat loss.

The efficiency of a kaasuvedenlämmitin is often measured by its energy factor or Uniform Energy Factor (UEF), which indicates how much hot water is produced per unit of fuel consumed. Modern gas water heaters are designed with safety features such as thermocouple controls to shut off gas flow if the pilot light is extinguished, and pressure relief valves to prevent over-pressurization. Installation and maintenance should be performed by qualified professionals to ensure safe and efficient operation.
