Käymiskompostori, also known as an anaerobic composter or fermenting composter, is a waste management system that utilizes anaerobic fermentation to break down organic materials. Unlike traditional aerobic composting, which requires oxygen, käymiskompostori operates in an oxygen-deprived environment. This process typically involves sealing organic waste, such as kitchen scraps and yard trimmings, in an airtight container.

The lack of oxygen promotes the growth of anaerobic microorganisms, which break down the organic matter through fermentation. This process generates heat, which can accelerate decomposition, and produces a nutrient-rich liquid compost or leachate, as well as a semi-decomposed solid material. The liquid can be diluted and used as a fertilizer, while the solid material may require further aerobic composting or burial to fully mature.

Käymiskompostori systems are often favored for their speed of decomposition compared to some traditional methods and for their ability to process a wide range of organic waste. They can also be more compact and suitable for smaller living spaces or areas where traditional composting might be challenging. The resulting compost can improve soil structure and fertility. Odors can sometimes be a concern with anaerobic processes, but well-maintained systems are designed to minimize this.
