Jätejalostus, also known as waste processing or waste refinement, refers to a range of processes aimed at treating waste materials to reduce their environmental impact, recover valuable resources, or convert them into a more manageable form. The primary goals of jätejalostus are to minimize the volume of waste sent to landfills, extract recyclable materials, and generate energy or other useful products.

There are several common methods of jätejalostus. Mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) combines sorting and separation techniques with biological processes like composting or anaerobic digestion to stabilize organic waste and recover recyclables. Incineration, or waste-to-energy (WTE), involves burning waste at high temperatures to produce electricity and heat, while significantly reducing waste volume. However, this method requires stringent emission controls. Recycling is a key component, involving the collection, sorting, and reprocessing of materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal into new products. Anaerobic digestion breaks down organic waste in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas (primarily methane) that can be used for energy, and digestate, a nutrient-rich residue that can be used as fertilizer. Composting is another biological process that decomposes organic matter into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

The choice of jätejalostus method depends on factors such as the type of waste, local infrastructure, economic feasibility, and environmental regulations. Effective jätejalostus plays a crucial role in moving towards a circular economy, where waste is viewed as a resource rather than a problem. It contributes to resource conservation, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and a cleaner environment.
