Järjestelmäresurssi, often translated as system resource, refers to any component of a computer system that is utilized by a program or process. These resources are essential for the operation of software and the execution of tasks. The primary system resources include the central processing unit (CPU), memory (RAM), storage devices (like hard drives or SSDs), and input/output (I/O) devices (such as keyboards, mice, and network interfaces).

The CPU is responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. When a program runs, it requires CPU time to process its operations. Memory, or RAM, is used to store data and instructions that the CPU needs to access quickly. The more RAM a system has, the more programs and data it can hold for immediate use, leading to better performance. Storage devices, on the other hand, provide persistent storage for programs and data, meaning they are retained even when the system is turned off.

I/O devices facilitate interaction between the user and the computer, as well as communication with other systems. Accessing these devices, whether for reading data from a disk or sending data over a network, also consumes system resources. Operating systems play a crucial role in managing and allocating these system resources among competing processes and applications. This management involves scheduling CPU time, allocating memory, and controlling access to storage and I/O devices to ensure efficient and fair utilization. Monitoring system resource usage is important for identifying performance bottlenecks and optimizing application behavior.
