In computing, a journalesystem refers to a journaling file system or database logging mechanism that records changes in a write-ahead log or journal to ensure data integrity. The journal records metadata and/or data; upon crash or power failure, the system can replay the log to recover a consistent state. Common implementations include ext3 and ext4, NTFS's metadata/log, XFS, and ZFS's intent log. Journaling modes vary by whether they log only metadata, both data and metadata, or use write-ahead strategies. Benefits include crash resilience, fast recovery, and simpler crash consistency guarantees. Limitations include performance overhead and complexity of recovery logic.

In publishing, a journalsystem is a platform used to manage an academic or professional journal throughout its lifecycle. Core components typically include manuscript submission, double-blind or single-blind peer review, editorial workflow, production tracking, and publication. The system stores metadata about articles, authors, editors, reviewers, and issues; it often integrates with Crossref for DOI assignment, ORCID for author identification, and indexing services. Open Journal Systems (OJS) is a widely used example of an open-source platform; commercial equivalents exist as well. Features may include templates, version control for revisions, access control, analytics, and long-term archiving interfaces (LOCKSS, CLOCKSS).
