These instruments are closely related to the Finnish kantele, a zither-like harp with metal strings, but jakelutasot typically feature a larger body and a different string arrangement.

Jakelutasot are often made from wood, such as pine or spruce, and have a trapezoidal or rectangular body with a curved back. The instrument usually has between 12 and 24 strings, arranged in parallel courses, which are plucked with a quill or plastic plectrum.
