Ivies refer to a group of climbing plants belonging to the genus Hedera. These plants are characterized by their woody stems and persistent, dark green leaves that are often lobed. The most well-known species is Hedera helix, commonly known as English ivy. Ivies are native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. They are known for their ability to grow on various surfaces, including walls, trees, and the ground, using small, aerial rootlets to attach themselves.

In their juvenile, non-flowering stage, ivy leaves are typically lobed. Once the plant matures and begins to flower, the leaves often become ovate or heart-shaped. The flowers are typically small and greenish-yellow, appearing in clusters. Following flowering, ivies produce small, dark berries. These berries are important food sources for many bird species.

Ivies are popular ornamental plants, frequently used in landscaping for ground cover, climbing walls, and as houseplants. However, their vigorous growth can make them invasive in some regions, outcompeting native vegetation and potentially damaging structures. In some areas, Hedera helix is considered an invasive species and its cultivation is restricted. Despite this, the plant has a long history of cultural significance and has been used in various medicinal practices historically, though scientific evidence for these uses is often limited.
