Rootlets are small roots that extend from the main root system of a plant. The term is often used to describe the fine, branching components of fibrous root systems or the numerous slender roots that radiate from a primary or secondary root. Rootlets increase the surface area available for water and nutrient uptake and are present in many land plants, including grasses, herbaceous dicots, and some woody species. They are multicellular structures distinct from root hairs, which are single-cell extensions from epidermal cells.

Rootlets originate from meristematic tissue at the root tip and develop as the root elongates and branches. Growth patterns vary by species and environment; some plants produce large numbers of short, shallow rootlets near the soil surface, while others develop deeper, longer rootlets. In many cases, rootlets form symbioses with soil microorganisms such as mycorrhizal fungi, which extend the effective absorbing surface and improve nutrient acquisition.

Functionally, rootlets contribute to water uptake, mineral absorption (notably phosphorus, nitrogen, and micronutrients), and soil stabilization. Their density and distribution influence a plant’s drought tolerance and nutrient use efficiency. In agricultural and botanical contexts, the term rootlet may be used descriptively to differentiate from the main roots or root hairs, although precise terminology often emphasizes the root system as a whole.
