Rootlet is a term used in biology to denote a small root-like structure with different meanings in different fields.

In botany, rootlets are slender, fine roots that arise from the plant’s primary or secondary roots. They increase the surface area available for water and mineral uptake and help anchor the plant. Rootlets are often especially numerous in young roots or in plants adapted to challenging soils, and they are commonly associated with root hairs that further enhance absorption.

In anatomy and neuroanatomy, rootlet refers to a small bundle of nerve fibers that emerges from the spinal cord or brainstem. Dorsal rootlets are primarily sensory, carrying information from peripheral receptors to the spinal cord, while ventral rootlets are primarily motor, transmitting signals from the spinal cord to muscles. The rootlets merge to form the dorsal and ventral roots, which then unite to create the mixed spinal nerve as it exits the vertebral column. Pathology affecting rootlets—such as inflammation, compression, or demyelination—can produce radicular pain, weakness, or numbness along the corresponding region.

Beyond these core meanings, the term rootlet may appear in other contexts as a diminutive reference to small root-like structures. The botany and neuroanatomy senses are by far the most common usages.
