itmost

Itmost, also known as Rural Tablet or Laopuco, is a post-Taiwanese aboriginal language of Amis origin, spoken primarily in Taiwan. The term "itmost" comes from the Amis language, with the word "itmost" translating to "yes" or "that person is there".

Itmost is one of several languages classified as a member of the Austronesian language family, specifically a subgroup within the Amis Language. This language is predominantly spoken by the Aborigines of Taiwan, especially by the Amis, who are one of the largest and most widespread indigenous peoples in Taiwan. Itmost primarily serves as a standard variety within the Amis dialect continuum and is often used as a lingua franca by its speakers.

Itmost has a relatively simple grammar system, characterised by a verb-based sentence structure. The language is also known for its extensive use of complex conjugations, indicating relationship between multiple items, such as proximity or interdependence. Although it is one of the indigenous languages existing in Taiwan, it does face challenges, such as the shift towards more dominant languages such as Mandarin Chinese, and other factors contributing to language endangerment.

Efforts have been made by linguists, anthropologists, and local residents to document the language, preserving it and promoting its understanding and appreciation among the general public. Itmost, as a valuable component of the cultural heritage of the Republic of China, continues to gain interest and importance from those studying the complexities of linguistic diversity in Taiwan.
