Isekülmutavad is an Estonian term that translates to "self-freezing" or "self-defrosting" and refers to a phenomenon observed in certain types of ice formations, particularly on bodies of water. It describes the process where a layer of ice on a lake or river appears to melt from its underside or from within, even when the ambient air temperature remains below freezing. This seemingly paradoxical occurrence is primarily attributed to the release of latent heat during the freezing process.

When water freezes, it transitions from a liquid to a solid state. This change involves the release of a significant amount of energy, known as latent heat of fusion. In some conditions, particularly when a layer of snow insulates the ice from the colder air above, this released heat can remain trapped within the ice or at the ice-water interface. This trapped heat can then cause localized melting from below, creating pockets or channels within the ice, or a gradual thinning from the bottom up.

The appearance of self-freezing can be striking, with ice sometimes seeming to develop internal cavities or an uneven, porous texture.
