Insulators, or insulation materials and devices, are substances or structures that reduce the transfer of energy or signals between regions of different temperature, electrical potential, or sound level. They are used across buildings, machinery, and consumer electronics to improve safety, comfort, and efficiency. In common usage, insulation refers to thermal insulation; specialized insulators address electrical or acoustic needs as well.

Thermal insulation minimizes heat exchange by reducing conduction, convection, and radiation. Effectiveness is commonly described by R-value (thermal resistance) or U-value (overall heat transfer coefficient) and increases with material thickness and low density in some products. Common materials include fiberglass, mineral wool, cellulose, polystyrene, polyurethane foams, aerogels. Installation quality, moisture control, and air sealing influence performance.

Electrical insulators resist electric current and prevent unwanted contact between conductors and environments. They are made from ceramics (porcelain), glass, and polymers such as silicone and epoxy. Insulators provide dielectric strength and environmental protection for components like cables, bushings, and switchgear. They may be solid, liquid-filled, or gas-insulated in high-voltage equipment.

Acoustic insulation reduces sound transmission and may combine porous absorbers (fiberglass, mineral wool) with dense barriers (mass-loaded vinyl, gypsum boards). Performance depends on material density, porosity, and installation; some designs aim for soundproofing, others for room acoustics.

Regulatory and safety considerations include fire resistance, moisture tolerance, durability, and environmental impact. Materials are rated by standards bodies for safety, flame spread, smoke generation, and recyclability. Advances focus on sustainable, low-toxicity, high-performance insulants.
