This technique is commonly used in air purifiers, humidifiers, and some types of air fresheners.

The principle behind ionization was first explored in the early 20th century, with notable contributions from scientists like Charles Pollock, who developed the first commercial ionizer in the 1920s. Ionization works on the basis that airborne contaminants, including allergens and pathogens, carry a positive electrical charge. By introducing negatively charged ions into the air, these particles become heavier and are drawn to surfaces, such as walls or floors, where they can be easily removed or settled.

While ionization can be effective in reducing airborne pollutants, its benefits are often debated.
