Counting methods vary: physical inventory counts verify actual quantities; cycle counting prioritizes items by importance or risk of error.

Procedures usually follow these steps: define the scope of the inventory, prepare the area and documentation, tag or label items as needed, collect data using scanners or manual entry, compare counts to existing records, investigate discrepancies, and update the inventory system. Data quality is critical, as inaccuracies propagate to purchasing, production planning, and financial reporting.

Technologies commonly employed are barcode scanning, RFID, and inventory management software or ERP systems, often with cloud-based access. Inventorying finds application in retail, manufacturing, warehousing, libraries, healthcare, and other sectors that manage physical assets or stock.

Key challenges include shrinkage, obsolescence, data entry errors, misplacement, theft, and seasonality. Best practices emphasize regular counts (such as cycle counting), separation of duties, clean and standardized item records, robust receiving and put-away processes, and transparent audit trails to support accurate, timely insights.
