Intumescentia is a term used to describe the process of swelling or expanding when exposed to heat. This phenomenon is most commonly associated with fire-retardant materials. When a material containing intumescent additives is subjected to high temperatures, such as in a fire, the additives undergo a chemical reaction. This reaction causes them to decompose and release gases, which in turn causes the material to foam and expand significantly. The resulting layer of char, often thick and spongy, acts as an insulator. This insulating layer effectively shields the underlying material from the heat of the fire, slowing down its degradation and preventing its structural failure for a longer period.
Intumescent coatings are widely used in construction and industrial applications to protect structural steel, timber, and
