Intrångsförebyggande, often translated as intrusion prevention, refers to a set of strategies, technologies, and practices designed to detect and prevent unauthorized access, misuse, or damage to computer systems, networks, and data. The primary goal is to proactively safeguard digital assets from malicious activities. This encompasses a broad range of measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), intrusion prevention systems (IPS), and security policies.

Intrusion detection systems monitor network traffic and system activities for suspicious patterns that may indicate an attack. When such patterns are identified, an IDS generates an alert. An intrusion prevention system goes a step further by not only detecting but also actively attempting to block or stop the identified threat in real-time. This can involve dropping malicious packets, resetting connections, or isolating compromised systems.

Effective intrusion prevention often involves a layered security approach. This means implementing multiple security controls at different points within an organization's infrastructure. Common components include access controls to limit who can access sensitive information, regular software updates and patching to address known vulnerabilities, and security awareness training for employees to mitigate human error, which is a frequent entry point for attackers. Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments are also crucial for identifying weaknesses before they can be exploited.
