Interprètes is the French term for interpreters, professionals who convert spoken or signed language from one language to another in real time or near real time, enabling communication across language barriers. They work in a wide range of settings and domains, and may specialize by mode or field. Interpreters differ from translators, who work mainly with written text.

Interpreting modalities include simultaneous interpretation (where the interpreter renders the source speech in another language while the speaker continues), consecutive interpretation (the speaker pauses for the interpretation), and whispered interpretation (a chuchotée version for small groups). Sign language interpreters provide interpretation for Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, using French Sign Language (LSF) or other national sign languages. Remote interpreting via telephone or videoconference is increasingly common.

Requirements vary by country, but professional interpreters typically undergo specialized training in interpretation or translation, with attention to language proficiency, memory, note-taking, and cultural mediation. Certification or accreditation may be offered by national or international bodies. Ethics emphasize accuracy and completeness, neutrality and impartiality, confidentiality, and professional conduct. Ongoing professional development is common.

Interpreters work in courts, healthcare, diplomacy, media, international organizations, and conferences; they may be employed as freelancers, employed staff, or through agencies. Notable professional associations include AIIC (International Association of Conference Interpreters) and other national bodies, which promote standards, ethics, and training.
