Interdepend is a term used to describe the state or act of mutual reliance among components of a system. In common usage, interdependence refers to reciprocal dependence that binds entities across ecological, social, economic, and technological domains. The core idea is that no element operates in isolation; the behavior or fate of one part affects others through direct interactions or shared resources and environments.

Key features include reciprocity, network structure, feedback loops, and context dependence. Interdependence creates coupling between components, which can enable coordinated function but also propagate effects, making systems more sensitive to disturbances at connected nodes. The concept emphasizes how actions in one part of a system can ripple through the whole, shaping stability, performance, and adaptability.

Applications span multiple fields. In ecology, interdependence describes relationships among species and their environments. In economics, it underpins global value chains, trade, and capital flows. In sociology and anthropology, it highlights networks of individuals and groups and their mutual obligations. In organizational theory, interdependence characterizes the reliance of teams, departments, and stakeholders on shared information and capabilities. The term is often used interchangeably with interdependence or interdependent; interdepend is primarily encountered as a verb form in some writings to denote the act of creating or recognizing mutual dependence.

Limitations include the risk of oversimplification and the possibility that certain connections concentrate vulnerability for particular nodes.
