Intentionbehavior, sometimes referred to as intention-behavior, is a term used in psychology and behavioral sciences to describe the relationship between a person's stated aims or plans and their subsequent actions. It explores why intentions sometimes lead to action and sometimes do not, and how various processes translate motivation into observable behavior.

The Theory of Planned Behavior posits that behavior is most likely when individuals have a positive attitude toward the behavior, perceive social pressure to perform it, and feel in control of performing it. Intentions serve as proximal predictors, but their strength is shaped by perceived behavioral control. To improve translation, researchers emphasize implementation intentions—specific if-then plans that specify when, where, and how to act—because they increase the likelihood that an intention will be enacted. Habits and automatic processes also influence how readily intentions become actions when cues are present.

Measurement typically relies on self-reports of intended and actual behavior in longitudinal designs, though objective measures and experience sampling methods are used to reduce bias. Empirical findings show that intentions explain a meaningful portion of behavioral variance, but a sizable gap remains due to resources, competing goals, situational constraints, and fluctuations in motivation.

Applications span health promotion, environmental behavior, and consumer research. Interventions often combine goal setting, action planning, problem solving for barriers, and environmental restructuring to facilitate execution of intentions.

Critiques note that the predictive power of intention varies by domain and culture, and that intention-focused models can overlook emotional, motivational, and contextual factors. Ongoing work seeks to integrate habit formation, self-regulation, and automaticity into broader models of intention-behavior.
