In administrative matters, instanserna refer to the successive authorities and courts that decide cases and hear appeals. A typical path starts with a first-instans myndighet or administrative court (forvaltningsrätt) that issues a decision. If needed, the decision can be reviewed by a second-instans body, such as a administrative court of appeal (kammarrätt), and finally by the supreme administrative court (Högsta förvaltningsdomstolen). This ladder allows for corrections and legal clarification of public decisions, for example in taxation, social insurance, and regulatory matters.

In the judiciary, instanserna denote the tiers of courts handling civil and criminal cases.
