Innspilling is the process of recording or capturing sound or video for later playback, distribution, or broadcast. The term is commonly used in Norwegian to describe activities in music production, radio and television, and film work. Etymologically, innspilling combines inn- meaning “in” with spille meaning “to play,” and it is analogous to the English term “recording.”

In music production, innspilling refers to laying down performances—vocal and instrumental takes—in a studio or controlled environment. It typically involves setting up microphones or direct inputs, capturing multiple takes, editing, comping, and preparing the material for mixing and mastering. The goal is to preserve a desired performance with adequate fidelity and tonal balance.

In broadcasting and film, innspilling can denote prerecorded content or scenes, as opposed to live transmission. It also covers dialogue recording, voice-over work, and other post-production tasks that occur after principal photography or during pre-broadcast editing.

Technically, innspilling has evolved from analog magnetic tape to digital multitrack recorders and computer-based workstations. Key concepts include sampling rate, bit depth, number of tracks, overdubs, and the creation of stems or mixes. Equipment choice, room acoustics, and monitoring play important roles in capture quality and the practical workflow of the recording session.

Legal and industry aspects surround innspilling, with the owner of the master recording typically controlling usage rights. Credits are attributed to performers, producers, engineers, songwriters, and studios, and contracts govern licensing, royalties, and distribution of the recorded material. In Norwegian usage, innspilling is distinct from innspill, which more often refers to input, suggestions, or contributions rather than a recorded capture.
