An inkjet printer is a non-impact device that forms images by ejecting tiny droplets of ink through microscopic nozzles onto a substrate, most commonly paper. They are widely used in homes, offices, and professional photo labs because they can produce high-quality color prints on a variety of media and keep equipment compact and affordable.

Most consumer inkjets employ drop-on-demand technology, using either thermal (bubble-jet) or piezoelectric actuation to generate droplets. In thermal designs, heat creates a bubble that propels an ink drop out of the nozzle; in piezo designs, a crystal changes shape to force a drop free. A smaller set of printers uses continuous inkjet, which streams a continuous flow of droplets and uses electrostatic deflection to direct only the required ones onto the page. Print heads may be integrated with the ink cartridges or mounted separately in the printer.

Inks are typically dye-based or pigment-based. Dye inks provide bright color and smooth gradients but may fade faster under light exposure, while pigment inks offer better longevity and water resistance. Many printers use CMYK cartridges, and higher‑end models add extended color channels such as light cyan, light magenta, or orange/green to broaden the color gamut.

Media coverage ranges from ordinary office paper to glossy or matte photo papers, coated fabrics, transparencies, and specialty media. Print resolutions commonly range from 600 to several thousand dots per inch, with higher-end models achieving very fine detail for photographs and graphics.

Advantages of inkjet printing include excellent color reproduction, versatility with media, and relatively low cost for color prints. Limitations can include ink cost per page, susceptibility to clogging if unused for long periods, slower speeds at high quality, and variability in long-term color stability depending on ink and media.
