Inhibitions are restraints on thoughts, emotions, and actions that prevent impulsive behavior. They help individuals regulate behavior to align with long-term goals, social norms, and safety, reducing the likelihood of harmful or maladaptive actions. In psychology, inhibition refers to processes that limit or suppress responses, often studied as a component of inhibitory control within executive function.

Inhibitions can be described across several domains. Behavioral inhibition refers to restraining overt actions; cognitive inhibition involves suppressing competing or distracting thoughts; emotional inhibition concerns regulating feelings; social inhibition describes restraint in social contexts, often to avoid embarrassment or judgment. These domains interact, so changes in one can affect others.

Biological and developmental bases are central to inhibition. The prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex are key brain regions, linked to cognitive control networks and error monitoring. Neurotransmitters such as GABA and dopamine influence inhibitory signaling. Inhibitory control typically improves in childhood and adolescence and can be influenced by stress, hormones, and development.

Inhibition has adaptive and maladaptive implications. Adequate inhibition supports goal-directed behavior and safety, while excessive inhibition can contribute to anxiety, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, or social withdrawal. Conversely, reduced inhibition can lead to impulsivity, aggression, or substance misuse. Substances such as alcohol can acutely diminish inhibitory control, increasing risk-taking in various contexts.

Measurement and research often use laboratory tasks like go/no-go, stop-signal, and Stroop tests to assess inhibitory control, alongside self-report questionnaires. Clinically, interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, training programs to improve self-control, and, in some cases, pharmacological or neuromodulation approaches aim to enhance inhibitory processes.
