The discipline addresses both IT-enabled information systems and non-system information flows, recognizing information as a strategic asset that spans multiple departments and processes. Roles such as information managers, data stewards, and chief information officers help establish accountability.

Information lifecycle management is central: capture, classification, storage, usage, retention, archiving, and eventual disposal. Technologies commonly involved include enterprise content management, document management systems, databases, data warehouses, data lakes, and business intelligence tools. Standards and frameworks, such as ISO 15489 for records management and ISO 27001 for information security, guide practice, while regulatory regimes (for example GDPR) shape privacy and data protection requirements.
