In practice, information richness refers to the amount and variety of signals, context, metadata, and structure that a message or dataset provides, enabling quick understanding, unambiguous interpretation, and informed decision-making. The term appears across information science, data management, human–computer interaction, and communication theory. It overlaps with related notions such as information richness in media richness theory, which compares how different media convey cues, feedback, and multiple layers of meaning.
