Inandningen, commonly referred to as inhalation, is the physiological process of drawing air into the lungs. It is the first phase of respiration and enables gas exchange, allowing oxygen to enter the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to be expelled.

During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, the chest cavity expands, and air is drawn through the nose or mouth, down the trachea, and into the bronchi and bronchioles toward the alveoli. The process is regulated by respiratory centers in the brainstem and by chemical receptors that monitor carbon dioxide, oxygen, and pH levels in the blood. Breathing can be automatic, managed by the autonomic nervous system, or voluntary, controlled through conscious effort.

In medical contexts, inhalation is used to deliver medications directly to the lungs via devices such as metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, and nebulizers. Proper technique and slow, deep inhalations improve deposition of the drug in the airways. Beyond therapy, inhalation is a key aspect of everyday respiration and is influenced by factors such as posture, physical activity, and environmental conditions.

Safety and health considerations include protecting the airways from harmful inhalants, such as dust, smoke, and chemical fumes. Occupational and environmental exposures can cause irritation or more serious lung disease.
