Impoverishing is the act or process of causing someone or a group to lose wealth or resources, or the state of becoming poor. As a verb, to impoverish means to deprive of money, assets, or means of subsistence. As an adjective, impoverishing describes effects or conditions that reduce living standards.

Common causes include macroeconomic shocks (recession, inflation), natural disasters, armed conflict, and health emergencies that impose large medical expenses. Structural factors such as insufficient access to credit, insecure property rights, low wages, and discrimination can also erode households' assets over time, leading to chronic or transient poverty. Impoverishing events may destroy productive assets (farmland, housing) or reduce income through job loss or price spikes.

Measurement often uses income or consumption poverty lines, but multidimensional approaches track deprivations in health, education, and living standards. The term is used to describe both episodes of sudden poverty (poverty spikes) and longer-term poverty traps that hinder upward mobility.

Impoverishment carries broad social costs, including poorer health, limited educational attainment, diminished social participation, and higher vulnerability to future shocks. The effects can be intergenerational, affecting children’s development and future opportunities.

Policy responses aim to prevent and mitigate impoverishing outcomes, through social protection (cash transfers, subsidies, unemployment insurance), disaster risk management, climate-resilient and inclusive growth, asset-building programs, and debt relief for heavily burdened populations. Debates surround responsibility for addressing impoverishment, balancing growth with protection, and the effectiveness of different interventions.
