Impactfracture is a type of material failure that occurs when a body is subjected to a sudden, high-rate loading event, such as impact, collision, or blast. It is characterized by rapid crack initiation and propagation, often with little plastic deformation.

The outcome depends on the material's properties and the loading conditions. Strain-rate sensitivity, fracture toughness, temperature, microstructure, and the presence of defects govern whether fracture is brittle or ductile under impact. In metals, adiabatic heating and shear-band formation can drive rapid failure; in ceramics and glasses, impactfracture tends to be brittle with flat fracture surfaces; polymers show a range depending on temperature and rate.

Measurement and analysis: Impactfracture is studied using impact tests such as Charpy or Izod, and high-strain-rate methods like the split Hopkinson bar. Impact energy, fracture surface morphology, and crack propagation velocity provide indices of impact toughness and failure mechanism.

Applications and implications: Designing to resist impactfracture is crucial in safety-critical parts like automotive frames, aircraft structures, helmets, and armor. Materials selection involves trade-offs among strength, toughness, and resistance to high-rate loading; improving impact resistance can involve toughening mechanisms, composite architectures, or heat treatment.
