Immunosuppressive refers to agents or conditions that reduce the activity or effectiveness of the body's immune system. The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Immunosuppression can occur naturally or be deliberately induced.

Natural immunosuppression can be a factor in certain medical conditions or life stages. For example, infants and the elderly often have less robust immune responses. Pregnancy also involves a degree of immune modulation to prevent the mother's immune system from rejecting the fetus. Certain diseases, like acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) caused by HIV infection, directly attack and weaken the immune system.

Therapeutic immunosuppression is intentionally used in medicine for several critical purposes. One primary use is to prevent organ transplant rejection. After a transplant, the recipient's immune system may recognize the new organ as foreign and attack it. Immunosuppressant drugs are administered to dampen this immune response, allowing the body to accept the transplanted organ. These drugs are also used to treat autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy tissues, such as in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or multiple sclerosis. Chemotherapy for cancer treatment can also suppress the immune system as a side effect of its action on rapidly dividing cells, including immune cells.

While beneficial in specific contexts, immunosuppression carries risks. A weakened immune system makes individuals more susceptible to infections, which can be more severe. Therefore, individuals on immunosuppressive therapy require careful monitoring and management to balance the benefits of reduced immune activity with the increased risk of illness.
