Posts are typically arranged into threads, and many boards emphasize anonymity, allowing users to participate without creating a persistent account. Some boards offer optional identities or tripcodes to identify posters, while others use simple name fields.

Board structure and features vary, but common elements include image attachments, thread-based discussions, and moderation. Users create threads by uploading an image and adding a caption or message; others reply with text and images. Threads may be bumped to the top by new posts, making them more visible, or locked by moderators. Some imageboards provide a catalog or archive view to browse threads; posting rules and allowed content differ by board and site.

Moderation and governance are central to imageboards. Policies are board-specific and enforced by moderators or community staff, who may delete posts, move or lock threads, or ban users. Content policies often address harassment, illegal activity, copyright concerns, and privacy. Because many boards are designed for fast, image-based posting, moderation challenges include handling harmful content, coordinating takedowns, and balancing free expression with safety.

History and influence: Imageboards originated in Japan with Futaba Channel (2chan) in the early 2000s and gained broad international attention with 4chan, launched in 2003. They contributed to internet meme culture and influenced the design of many later forums and social platforms. Their emphasis on image-based content and quick, thread-driven discussion remains a distinctive feature.
