Ilmajäädytys, also known as air cooling, is a method of heat transfer that utilizes ambient air to cool down objects or systems. This process is commonly employed in various applications where a cooling medium is required and water is either unavailable, undesirable, or too expensive. The fundamental principle behind ilmajäädytys is that cooler air absorbs heat from a warmer surface. This heat transfer can be enhanced through several mechanisms.

One primary method is natural convection, where the warmer air surrounding the object rises due to lower density, allowing cooler air to replace it. This creates a continuous circulation of air that carries away heat. Another method is forced convection, which uses fans or blowers to actively move air across the heat-generating component. This significantly increases the rate of heat transfer compared to natural convection. These heat sinks typically feature fins or other extended surfaces.
