Ihosyöpään is a Finnish term that translates to "skin cancer." It refers to the abnormal growth of skin cells, which can occur in various parts of the body exposed to the sun. The most common types of ihosyöpään are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

The primary cause of ihosyöpään is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, mainly from the sun and tanning beds. UV radiation damages the DNA in skin cells, leading to mutations that can cause uncontrolled cell growth. Other risk factors include having fair skin, a history of sunburns, a large number of moles, a weakened immune system, and a family history of skin cancer.

Symptoms of ihosyöpään can vary depending on the type. Basal cell carcinoma often appears as a pearly or waxy bump, a flat flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesion, or a sore that bleeds and scabs over. Squamous cell carcinoma may present as a firm, red nodule or a scaly, crusted patch. Melanoma, the most dangerous form, can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new, unusual-looking spot on the skin. The ABCDE rule is a helpful guide for recognizing potential melanomas: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolving (changing) in size, shape, or color.

Early detection and treatment of ihosyöpään are crucial for a positive outcome. Regular self-examination of the skin and professional skin checks by a dermatologist are recommended, especially for individuals with risk factors. Treatment options typically include surgical removal of the cancerous cells, and in more advanced cases, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy may be used. Prevention strategies focus on minimizing UV exposure through sun protection, such as wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours.
